December 10th 2002
december 7th, k4 nuernberg

just because there are no live-reviews so far from the tour i though,
i´ll post some of my impressions of the antifolk cshow last night.....

the lineup should be kimya, toby, jeffrey & jack lewis with anders
on drums and seth ov dufus. unfortunatelly seth had to leave for
ny two days ago because of his health, i´m sure that this wasa hard
decision for him....so all the best from this place

the show was at the same place where the moldy peaches played in
may, there were about 90 people around, some had a long way and
some followed to frankfurt for the show this night. it was a really relaxed,
enthusiastic atmosphere, some people were sitting on the floor and
most of the people were really listening, not talking...

toby goodshank was starting with an acoustic set of
about half an hour, first song was the butterfly, then
davey frogger, el spocko - guess one of my favorites -
my day off, hello matthew, a body count - amazing
choice - cover of the winner loses, and last song was
wake up all the robots....

it was really awesome to listen to toby performing
his songs really intense, from whispering to screaming
loudly, only heard them on the cds so far and it is a
blast to feel them. the audience was very much into it...

short break, listening to some ny antifolk artist froma mix-cd who couldn´t
manage  to come on tour or already had to be back like prewar yardsale,
peter dizozza, gay pimp and others

then jeffrey lewis and brother jack plus anders griffen on drums, who  just
released an album which got nearly sold out on tour and i´ll listen to
later, came on stage. i saw them in august playing and the set was kinda
similar but shorter, jack is more cooperating with jeff on vocals and there
were a few new songs like "i´m building you an aircraft with my hands",
don´t know if it´s the songtitle but it´s a really great song with an beautiful
melody

jeff introduced the band and startet with a sneak preview of a song
called floating away, kinda low budget video he "painted" comic-style
and showed the audience site by site, while he performed the song...
he earned overwhelming applause. then there was a solo acoustic song
of him and the band performed a few songs, we already knew, like the
first time i did acid, requested by a guy from the audience, or the
single-hit back when i was 4, but also a few new songs, i guess they
will appear on the next album, due for next spring hopefully. there was
a second video shown and the performance got really rocky on some points

then kimya joined and they introduced the
new band, the bundles, and it was the debut-
performance and a really blast, kimya
singing together with jeff, some songs were
from the recording of their ep i haven´t heard. really
great songs and kinda uplifting, with a wide
musically range, from remembering to the peaches
and to marvin gaye but always with their special
charisma. kimya is such an amazing singer, from
whispering, singing melancholic, crooning and
screaming... also anders sang one song

hopefully they´ll make a record of the bundles
songs....

time was floating away so quick, and for me it was kinda dreaming, being on another place, maybe also a result of lack of sleep, some excitement about organising this night and how many people will appear and stuff like this, so couldn´t think really organized and, of course, being a fan...

then kimya started her set with being cool from "my cute fiend sweet
princess", she offered us to sit down because it wouldn´t be a rock-show
and hoped that the songs wouldn´t be boring for us because of the language
barrier and lots of words....but no, they aren´t, ok, there is the language,
hope you´ll get it what i try to say, but people who listen can feel the
expression, it´s not about entertainment but about life of a real person
with ups and downs and you want to say "i like you", otherwise some
experiences you had in your own life....

there was a song about michael jackson, if i got it
right, with the line "having been fucked is no
excuse for being fucked up", hadlock padlock
followed, eleventeen, chemistry, my bike and a
few more

it was an amazing night, with amazing artists...
but, i would say, at first with great friends and
human beings and i guess, every night is special
and we had a great time here...

today, we talked on the phone live on my antifolk-radioshow on their way to hamburg and they all sang us "fun wearing underwear" from dufus, thank you all

sometimes, like now, i think, i can stop searching for new music because this is timeless and i can listen to it again and again, but then there is the kinda addiction, the distance and the job at the radio...i´ll try to handle this and keep the contacts and great that there are sites like this.

from nuernberg with love s.w.
