Paul Emerson Leicht
Paul Emerson Leicht was born at Mount Sinai Hospital, and raised in Riverdale the Bronx. PEL's influences early on were Folk and Blues and Motown and RocknRoll. LedZeppelin and Pete Seeger. Pink Floyd and Otis Redding. Earth, Wind and Fire and Jethro Tull. He learned how to play simple guitar chords from Pete Seeger and other folk musicians his parents knew. Many subtler influences crept into his music in his teens via the Sex Pistols, The Clash, B52s, The Ramones, The Speedies, The Police, The
Grateful Dead, CSNY. When he was 17 he was given a sort of weird street tutelage by local musicians in Greenwich Village. Among the likely suspects were Count Mathew, Kenny Gwynn, Zorky, Ellis, Joie Miserable and the Wurms (especially Chuck "the Raven" Hancock) who all showed him various aspects of performing and guitar work. His song writing stems from a variety of sources mostly from his need to write lyrics that are from his heart and experiences. He doesnt pretend to be a poet or a great sage but instead hopes to pluck a few good feelings from his heart and lay them out for the listener to sample at will like a buffet. This approach has often led him to discard lyrics and songs entirely when he doesn't feel that way anymore. Only recently has he learned the value of keeping old songs fresh and vital. To further muddy this history he gave up performing in the 90s after a series of gigs at Nightingales. This "retirement" was due to disillusionment with the musical atmosphere in the city and the lack of good venues for solo artists with his particularly weird roots. Little did he know that Lach was making things happen at the fort... Hed heard about it but only peripherally and didnt get the significance until in 2001 his friend Hogan dragged him kicking and screaming to first the Raven and the Sidewalk. New to antifolk, old to the newyork music scene PEL rocks with determination to be both a singer and a guitarist in a world where it is easier to be one or the other. He is interested and motivated by his friendships and his music and politics where it concerns the well being of others. He is sarcastic but he tries to be compassionate too. He has been attending the antihoots at the Sidewalk Cafe since early 2002 and was an intrical member of the scene at the Raven since september 2001 and was responsible for editing the last Raven Recordings made by Hogan Long on September 11th 2002. He is an admirer of many antifolkers like Lach, Joie of DeadBlondeGirlfriend, Randi Russo, Jude Kastle, Major Matt, Nan, Tim Dark, Toby Goodshank, Red Jacket, Jon Berger and more. So many so that his dedication in his first cd Out Of The Broken Sky is filled with names in tiny 4 point print. He is slow to incorporate changes but he is starting to feel very much a part of this thing we call Antifolk
