Butch Ross
Philadelphia-based folk artist Butch Ross looks like someone you know but can't quite place where you know him from. This is also true of his music, Ross' songs have a worn-in feel to them that makes them comforting and easily likable. This hand-worn familiarity often obscures the fact that Ross' is a first-rate songsmith. Butch's story-songs and character portraits are crafted with the same measure of genuine sympathy and unflinching honesty that make the songs of Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen resonate.
Live, Butch Ross is a tour de force. He's sharp, irreverent, compassionate and -more often than not- funny. And much like the live performances of Cheryl Wheeler or Vance Gilbert, Ross' funny songs and funnier banter are a foil to offset the barbed and often heart-breaking tales of his songs.

Butch has been performing as a solo act a scant three years but in that time has performed with such notable folk musicians as Peter Mulvey, Moxy Fruvous, Great Big Sea, Eddi Reader, Deirdre Flint, Christopher Williams, Jim Infantino, Dave1s True Story, The Jazz Mandolin Project and the legendary Graham Parker. He was a showcase artist at the 2000 Flacon Ridge Folk Festival. and his song New York was an "essential MP3" at about.com's folk music page.
