GET SOMETHING
OFF OF MY CHEST
ANTIFOLK VOL 1"  (Rough Trade)

"ANTIFOLK VOL 1"  (Rough Trade) is hereand  I'm happy to say it's a reason to be excited!  LET ME GET SOMETHING OFF OF MY CHEST STRAIGHT AWAYif the recent  Olive Juice message board postings are any indication, then in the coming months most of us antifolkies in New York will have to endure many people shooting their mouths off  about how it "should have been done" and "who should have been on it" and speculate about "why certain people ended up on it" in fact as I write this everyone's bickering about whether there are enough women on the disc.! PLEASE  DON'T DO THAT!!!!!!!!!  You'll miss out on a really really cool disc. The songs here are soooo good !  And for those of you who are from outside of New York,  It does a great job as an intro to Antifolk!  What I would give to be hearing Prewar Yardsale "weird", Joie Dead Blonde Girlfriends killer "Another Journey" or Major Matt Mason's "rockstar" for the first time!  To me if there is an "important" antifolk tune one of these three acts penned it ( it's probably "rockstar")

By no means is this disc an exhaustive representation of all the scene has to offer (no one said it would be did they?) but for anyone it leaves out, it includes someone who maybe isn't exactly on the "A list" at Sidewalkand that's another reason to like it!   "Gin is Not My Friend" by ISH MARQUEZ is to this day one of the most amazing songs I have ever heard  ...but Ish has had a rocky relationship with the club.   Brer Brian's "Harlem '99" is a beautiful piece of work as well...you can almost see his room and smell the beer!  Great song!

As you'd expect, ANTIFOLK VOL. 1 offers tracks from (as Joie might refer to them) "Antifolk all-stars" Kimya Dawson and Adam Green (MOLDY PEACHES) and the extended moldy family,  Stipplicon.  Also making  an appearance, labelmate JEFFREY LEWIS. The disc rightly includes "Drinking Beers with Mom" from the "Father of antifolk" himself LACH.  This song is a classic.  I must admit it sounds naked without the "hey!" a live crowd supplies in the chorus.  But that just means I've been lucky enough to be around to see it played live Long live the "get high shack"!

It's worth mentioning that Spencer Chakedis produces several of the tracks on this record including Turner Cody and Jim Flynn (these great songs come the closest to folk and both of these guys play their instruments really well)  Grey Revell's gorgeous "Gone, Gone"  and Patsy Grace's  "falling" as well as the Barry Bliss track "All I  Really Want"  are also Spencer's productions.

Paleface's "say what you want" opens the discthis guy has more history than anyone else on the disc (besides lach). Brian Piltin wins the "I can't get this song out of my head" award with catchy "Tramp star", While Diane Cluck's "Monte Carlo" alone makes the disc worth having!

For me personally two songs stand out! The first BARRY BLISS' "all I  really want" is the kind of song that when it's done you exclaim "holy shit!" and press "back" on your cd player.  I have been doing it for a week straight.
"All I really want is for no one to understandto just be left alone and to not be in demand I wish my money would disappeardon't you get it goddamnit I don't want to be here! All I really want is to beat your fucking ass!"

It doesn't get any more honest or giving than this!  This song blows me away!  The other stand outDUFUS' "Wee ma moo" has hamonies to make a member of Testosterone Kills jealous (I can say that right?)  It's good on every level. musicianship..lyricscraft  Honest, humorous, fun and absurd. This is a awesome beautiful adventurous song and raises the bar on all of us!

Finally in a little stroke of genius the disc ends with a bit called "Whitney Houston" by Rick Shapiro  (Fortified Records anti comedian)  It's a really perfect choice and  actually one of my favorite tracks.  (yeah I said it!)  very funny!

It's called "ANTIFOLK VOL 1" Please buy it!  You'll be glad you didand you may find out you love some people you didn't know you loved!   I did !  Great job Adam &  Kimya The players And everyone involved!
