Brad- what you up to now
<Anonymous6843> i'm at the library and i'm going to try & go mix in a minute; have time today as a paleface rehearsal was cancelled
Brad- Ahh- you wanna do a quick chat?
<Anonymous6843> sure
Brad- Cool-
Brad- I had an interview set up fro today but it musta fell through
Brad- Change your name if you can
Anonymous6843 is now known as Anders.
Anders- does that work?
Brad- Hello- Anders
Anders- hey
Brad- You have been all over the place drumming for all sorts of bands/ arrangements, what brought you to the antifolk thing?
Anders- well, i guess, as i'm fond of saying, it happened gradually and then suddenly. maybe it started by meeting and playing with grahm dion who was one of the founding members of dufus and introduced me to seth
Anders- and then seth and i started playing different things, first gradually and then suddenly
Anders- i met ish around the same time, at a building/space called abc norio, there was an art installation going on
Brad- I don't know ish
Anders- it was really cool, they had all kinds of paintings, drawings, sculptures... oh yeah, that was it, my friend john fragala had a sculpture there
Anders- ish marquez is by all acounts an amazing songwriter a real original and an inspiration to many an antifolker i think
Anders- at least as far as the music goes
Brad- I am so outta the loop
Anders- he's otherwise gotten in to trouble at times that is... less inspirational
Anders- i'll have to send you some of his music
Brad- That woulod be cool!
Brad- I am checking out the beggings of your Cd again now
Brad- You are through recording correct
Anders- anyway, ish came in, half in the bag, pushing his way with his guitar through the crowd in this gutted kitchen where they were concocting drinks
Brad- uh huh
Anders- ooops, i'm always typing when i get your next words
Anders- as far as recording
Brad- Hey we like to challenge the readers
Anders- i want to do my vocals again on a couple of tracks
Anders- otherwise, i'm getting favorable response across the board and it's exciting
Brad- Your bio said that you were working on 2 cds
Anders- meanwhile, back at the gutted kitchen
Anders- ish got in front of everybody and made this introduction:
Anders- all right! i'm tired! and i'm pissed off! i just got off of work, but they asked me to
Anders- so just don't talk louder than i sing... that's all i ask
Anders- 2 cd's
Anders- the other is my group Zoom
Anders- it's basically a jazz group that does original music and a couple of tunes i like
Anders- some tunes that i transcribed off records
Anders- i don't really like calling it a jazz group
Brad- antijazz>
Anders- i just call it people music
Anders- but yeah
Anders- there's been a lot of arrogance and divisivness in the jazz world
Anders- i don't want to be associated with that
Anders- in fact, not unlike lach finding little welcome in folk circles; i'm sure people
Anders- would challenge whether Zoom! plays jazz and i really don't care
Anders- let people like wynton marsalis worry about that
Brad- hhahaha
Anders- i'm just interested in playing music and getting along with people
Anders- the antifolk is where that happens for me
Anders- they are all really supportive and positive
Anders- even though they often talk about how they'd prefer things to be
Anders- but actually that's very positive
Brad- Perfer what to be?>
Brad- life?>
Anders- yeah you know, one thing or another
Anders- sometimes the past even
Anders- i know we can't do anything about that
Brad- I perfer the past to be the past
Anders- there it is
Brad- You are going to Europe with Jeff lewis right- have you played with him a lot>
Anders- i guess we have somewhat concrete plans to leave at the end of july
Anders- we've played a lot more recently
Anders- having just gotten offr a tour
Anders- wherein seth from dufus played bass in place of jeff's brother jack
Anders- who was busy graduating from college
Anders- before that
Anders- jeff and jack and i only did a handful of shows
Anders- but
Brad- Me too- graduating I mean with half a can of tuna
Anders- i was an immediate fan of jeff when i first heard him as the opener for lonesome crew
Anders- at the knitting factory a few years ago
Anders- half a can of tuna
Anders- funny stuff right?
Brad- Just listenin to your Cd
Brad- make it quick
Anders- i always get crazy messages on my machine
Anders- they're all real
Brad- I get stuff like uh call me sometime
Anders- so let me finish the ish meeting real quick
Anders- after his inspired introduction
Anders- i knew i had to listen
Anders- but i wasn't expecting much
Anders- but immediately i was hypnotized by this kind of
Anders- gypsy music of the world
Anders- coming through strange but flowing harmonies
Anders- and a powerful and dramatic voice
Anders- i listened to his whole set mesmorized
Anders- and immediately wanted to work with him
Anders- but he was more interested in this hippie girl playing a djembe
Anders- so i got her number and told him that we'd all get together
Anders- that was it
Brad- Still there?
Anders- yeah
Anders- what's it lookin' like?
Brad- Ok- what is what lookin like?
Anders- i don't know
Brad- hahaha
Anders- have i sent informative informs>?
Brad- DO you pick who you work with or do people approach you?
Anders- need some more?
Anders- oh, both
Anders- recently a lot of people
Anders- have asked about my availability
Anders- it's exciting
Anders- i've only really made myself
Anders- available to do these different shows
Anders- sort of this year
Anders- but i think i'm going to focus on just a couple of projects
Brad- oh really- which ones?
Anders- well, probably paleface and larval organs
Anders- i'm open to seeing which way things go
Anders- i'm interested in jeffr's plans
Anders- i feel like we've only
Anders- how do you say?
Anders- touched the top of the iceberg
Anders- or something like this
Anders- i'd like to work with regina spektor some more when the time is right
Anders- she's a real good friend of mine
Anders- so we're just being that right now
Brad- cool-
Anders- but sometimes we make nice music
Brad- she is great
Brad- I might try and interview her soon
Anders- yeah, i'm really looking forward to her new cd
Anders- no idea when it will be done
Anders- don't know if i'm on it
Anders- she's leaving for paris on the...
Brad- out this month she said maybe
Anders- 27th? yeah. and she'll be gone for a couple of months
Brad- recorded it christmas day
Anders- oh really?
Anders- than i'm not on it
Anders- she does have some tracks with me
Brad- yep see the old news section of the fansite
Anders- there pretty good
Anders- i don't know what will become of them
Brad- Hopefully we will get to hear em at some point
Brad- Thanks fo rtelling so many people that I was coming up there
Anders- oh yeah, i didn't know whether you wanted that or not
Anders- but i didn't think of that
Brad- That was cool
Anders- until after i'd already told everyone
Brad- iT WAS tons o fun 4 me to be there
Anders- that was my first antihoot in quite a while, i've
Anders- never played at one
Anders- but i get to see a lot of friends
Brad- People said you rarely go there
Brad- me too rarely - well only once
Anders- yeah, it's true, i usually have a reason in particular
Brad- It was cool to see you the next night at Nan's show
Anders- yeah, she's great. never saw her do that before, glad that i made it.
Anders- she is one of the only people in the world that i'll share my drums with
Anders- you know in
Anders- my family
Anders- it was always a very important thing to respect yours, and another's musical instruments
Anders- since my parents are serious musicians
Anders- they needed there instruments to be respected
Anders- which can be hard for kids to understand
Anders- in fact
Anders- it's hard for anyone to undersytand
Anders- because music is so giving
Anders- people feel like
Anders- they should be able to play your instrument
Anders- especially a drum set that you just bang on
Anders- well
Anders- i have an intimate relationship with each of my instruments
Anders- and i'll tell you the truth
Anders- even if nothing breaks
Anders- or is moved around
Anders- i can always feel the difference when someone has played my drums
Anders- i like to keep my feeling in them
Anders- nan has the right kind of love for things
Anders- that her feeling feels okay when i get back to them
Anders- she only played them once actually
Anders- i guess it was the antifolk winter 2002 fest
Anders- scwervon played the same night as jeff lewis and paleface
Anders- actually i think they played after all of us
Brad- It was cool to meet paleface- I have been a fan of his for a while
Anders- yeah, he's great. it's going to be fun as all of this flowers
Anders- i met pf by chance sort of
Anders- i had never heard him before and
Anders- i was opening for the peaches with dufus
Anders- and he was playing that night too
Anders- it was at the mercury
Anders- and their drummer couldn't make the sound check so he asked me
Anders- if i'd play
Anders- i think it felt pretty good
Anders- i like his music
Anders- and i told him if he ever needed a drummer
Anders- i was into it
Brad- I want to hear his new stuff
Anders- i think he called within a month or two
Anders- yeah
Anders- i wish i could record with him
Anders- so far haven't had the chance
Brad- what do you enjoy besides music?
Anders- well
Anders- in the past couple of years
Anders- i have become very much involved
Anders- in my tai-chi practice
Anders- i have a very good teacher
Anders- and again, a very supportive community
Brad- so you kick ass in your spare time
Anders- (just like the supportive af comm)
Anders- yeah right
Anders- it's funny
Anders- i used to practice
Anders- western boxing a lot
Anders- just for exercise and because i'm a boxing fan
Anders- or at least i like the old fights
Anders- but
Anders- as i've practiced
Anders- after a while i found out that i'd never want to be in a fight again
Anders- which is kind of nice
Anders- we practice
Anders- tai chi, not so much as a fighting method,
Anders- although it can be used in this way
Anders- in our tradition
Anders- i think it's more about
Anders- developing the relationship between your mind and body
Anders- in an effort to maintain healthy circulation
Anders- exercise your insides
Anders-> and allow your body to be
Anders- interconnected, or integrated, with itself
Brad- I need to work on my outside
Anders- so that you can learn to expand
Anders- and balance with your surroundings
Anders- and ultimately float between and with heaven and earth
Brad- sounds like a religion
Anders- well, no not really
Anders- it depends on what you mean
Anders- i like the idea of religio simply as
Anders- being regular about something
Anders- like someone that has season tickets to the so-and-so's and
Anders- goes religiously
Anders- or something like that
Anders- my schedule is erratic
Anders- and i use that as
Anders- a partial excuse as to why i haven't yet
Anders- developed the discipline
Anders- to have a practice that is regular
Anders- i'll tell you something though
Anders- as far as religion
Brad- yep
Anders- you know, there are a lot of sort of, intellectual and philosophical ideas that go
Anders- with the tai-chi
Anders- mostly coming from taoism and confucianism
Anders- which is actually coming out of taoism
Anders- but sort of uses a more practical approach to dealing with society
Anders- actually, taoism alone my send you out and out and further out
Anders- and i kinda like that too
Anders- but life is with people
Anders- anyway
Anders- the thing is
Brad- I don't really know too much about that
Brad- the tao
Anders- these philosophical ideas you can consider
Anders- and learn a lot just by thinking about them
Anders- but the cool thing is
Anders- that when you have the physical practice to go with it
Anders- it almost corrects your minds ideas about what it is
Anders- and then your mind ventures further
Anders- and your body again follows
Anders- not for nothin'
Anders- but with all due respect
Anders- i've never had that relationship with jesus
Anders- but i don't dispute with anyone who does
Anders- and i don't want to talk about jesus
Anders- anymore
Anders- you can get in a lot of trouble like that
Anders- lots of people could get killed
Brad- down here especially
Anders- it happens all the time
Brad- Is there anything that you would like to ask me?
Anders- well yeah
Anders- actually
Brad- uh oh
Anders- i'm sorta unclear on how all of this happened
Brad- what happened
Anders- where did you find these people
Anders- and what ever possessed you
Anders- to put up this site?
Brad- I got into Roger Manning like 7-8 years ago
Brad- then Cindy Lee Berryhill, Kirk Kelly, Paleface, Lach and others
Brad- Found it hard to find info on the scene.
Brad- Actually tought about starting a Roger Manning site 6 years ago before he had one
Brad- He sent me lots of stuff but i never got around to it
Anders- wow
Anders- now you get around to all of this?
Brad- Well my wife started a site
Brad- about crochet like a year ago on homestead
Brad- and like 8 months ago reserved the rights to antifolk.homestead made a front page and artist page for me
Brad- And i was like whatever
Brad- Then she bought a scanner and I just started thinking about it. I used to be an art major and I guess the design aspect spoke to me
Anders- i see
Brad- I started asking liek 12 artsists if they would be ok with it and grew it from there
Anders- it seems like a lot is happening right now
Brad- I showed it to a couple of people then about the midlle of april I told the artists who were on it at the time where it was
Anders- so it's grown pretty quickly
Brad- Maybe- Maybe it was just time for a fansite. hogan long was thinking about making one and even registered domain names for it
Brad- He offered it to me but I am a package deal with my wifes site
Brad- Plus it helped that I was unemployeed and just in school
Brad- Now it doesn't really take up a lot of time since the critical mass has been reached and I have gotten better at it
Brad- It is still fun for now
Anders- well, obviously it seems to have done a lot of good for the people
Brad- Being so far away I don't know about that, but it is good for people who want to have a centralized place i think
Brad- there is a lot of info on the site now
Anders- sure is
Brad- I just want to work on more a different content
Brad- and different content
Anders- how do you mean?
Brad- Once you have seen the artist page is there is really not much reason to go back... maybe check it every once in a while, but the interviews and columns Could if interesting enough and i drive traffi
Brad- drive traffic to the site
Anders- true
Brad- the news if updated and good could bring peope
Brad- I think along with any zine the site has potential to be a source for some good stiuff
Brad- The advantage the site has is reach, the zine has great contacts because of proximity and such
Anders- it's been fun reading the peaches diary entries
Anders- it seems like, and maybe it's only because i've just been around a lot more often,
Anders- but, so much seems to be happening
Anders- still, it's not all quite manifest
Brad- who knows what will happen
Brad- The peaches have been good for teh site
Anders- they've been good to get others out there a little bit too
Brad- I get a lot of hits from them, and Joie is spreading the work over in europe now too
Anders- hey, i'm about to get kicked out
Anders- they're closing this room
Brad- Ok fast 5 questions
Anders- i should seriously consifder eating anyway - haven't yet
Anders- shhot
Anders- i mean, shoot
Brad- fave food- then go get it
Anders- oh, couldn't say, i like all of the individual attributes of different things
Brad- pick one
Anders- well, i'm probably going to get some pizza
Brad- me too!! Last time you were blown away by someone on stage-
Anders- blown away?
Brad- amazed
Anders- well, i think regina spektor at the sidewalk cafe on saturday june 1st inspired quite an emotional response
Brad- Sun ra crazy or genius?
Anders- well, a little of both really. he is a great observer and knows how to organize his thoughts and mobilize his people
Anders- love that he came to visit our planet
Brad- Which are better 80's movies or 90's movies
Anders- well, i have a special affection for the 80's movies because mostly my teens i went through in the 80's - it's some kind of an association, i'm a different person now
Anders- but i loved those days
Anders- so i love the movies
Anders- i could really relate to the breakfast club on some levels
Brad- Jock?
Anders- who me?
Brad- relate to him
Brad- in the breakfast club
Brad- Thanks so much for doing this Anders-
Anders- well, i relate to all of them a little - i'm so bad at this - i always give these kind of answers, but they're true
Anders- i could say a lot about that movie
Anders- maybe i'll write a feature about it
Anders- i'm interested in sociology
Anders- i've written some things
Brad- Hey you write what you want and I will post it
Anders- cool
Brad- Thanks for doing this get something to eat I will post it most likely next week
Anders- thank you, looking forward - so when should i tell people to check out the new page?
Brad- when I fix it up I will write you to check it out and then when you give the OK I will post
Anders- sounds good
Anders- we'll talk soon
Anders- i'll be looking for your message
Brad- Be good- thanks again and IT WAS GREAT TO MEET YA
Anders- good day sir
Anders- has left the chat room.
